Just one week after schools in Albania opened, multiple cases of COVID-19 in educators have been reported.
In Berat, eight teachers in two schools have been diagnosed. In Bulqiza, five teachers at the Shefqet Tanci school have been confirmed as being infected.
Three employees at the Ismail Qemali University in Vlora have also been infected with the virus. The University has closed the offices of the Rector and the Department of Biology. 10 other staff members are awaiting the results of tests and are currently in isolation.
One case has been found at a school in Gjirokaster and a further four at a school in Polican.
Meanwhile, a kindergarten teacher in Kucova and her child have also been diagnosed with COVID-19. The child was in one of the groups in the kindergarten. The teacher and her family have been quarantined and 12 children in the kindergarten are self-isolating and will be tested.
Albanian schools opened on Monday 14 September amid concerns that there was no proper plan in place to prevent the spread of the virus. One week later, at least 23 cases have been confirmed in educational institutions.
