20 MEPs Call for Opening Of Accession Talks by End of Year

20 MEPs from different political groups have called on all parties involved to find a solution for the opening of talks with Albania and North Macedonia before the end of the year.

MEPs warn that failure to open talks with the two countries is jeopardizing the EU’s credibility in the Western Balkans.

The joint statement of the 20 MEPs in the European Parliament was posted on Twitter by EU Ambassador Luigi Soreca on Tuesday. It states that:

“MEPs said that Albania deserves to move forward on its path to membership, emphasizing the efforts for reforms, especially in the field of justice, as well as the positive assessment of the Commission.

They added that Albania needs to make more efforts in several other areas, in order to meet the conditions set by the European Council.

“They have called on Bulgaria to find a compromise with Northern Macedonia on bilateral issues, so as not to delay the accession process.”
