Albania noted an increase in deaths of around 6000 in 2020 when compared to 2019. This is an increase of over 27%.
Following a freedom of information request sent to the Directorate of Civil Status by Monitor.al, some 28,000 people lost their lives in 2020. This is an increase on 2019 whereby some 22,000 people died. On average, during the period of 2015-2019, 22,000 people died each year, according to Monitor and data from INSTAT.
Alban Ylli, an expert at the Institute of Public Health told Monitor.al that “the main reason for the increase in deaths is COVID. This is typical as in other countries.”
According to data from the EU, there were almost 300,000 more deaths between March and October 2020, then in the same periods during the years 2016-2019. The EU found that the increase in deaths was between 8% and 25% during the year.
In the US, there were some 299,028 excess deaths between January and October 2020.
The Albanian government has reported a total of 1315 deaths during the COVID-19 pandemic. When we look at the increase in deaths during 2020, that leaves over 4500 unaccounted for. The data on causes of mortality for deaths in 2020 has not yet been published on INSTAT.
In Q3 of 2020, there were 6,294 deaths in total, an increase of 25.7% on the previous year.
