Kosovo Court Convicts Serb Ex-Fighter Zoran Djokic of War Crimes

Prishtina Basic Court (equivalent to Court of the First Instance) has sentenced Zoran Djokic to 12 years in prison for his involvement in attacks by Serbian forces against Albanian civilians in the Kosovo town of Peja during the war in 1999.

Djokic was found guilty of being part of an organized group wearing military, paramilitary and police uniforms which physically and mentally abused Kosovo Albanians and then forced them out of their houses in the Kristal and Te Soliterat neighborhood.

Some of the victims were killed.

Djokic claimed that he had been in Belgrade at the time when the crimes were committed.

“The court has also analyzed the accused’s alibi and has reached the conclusion that the alibi has not been proven,” said judge Arben Hoti, BIRN reported.

Thursday’s verdict of Prishtina Basic Court can be appealed by the defense.
