Kosovo in holding local elections, on Sunday, to elect mayors and municipal councils for its 36 municipalities. In the running are 166 mayoral candidates and 5198 councillor candidates.
The election takes place in two rounds. A mayoral winner shall receive more than 50% of the votes—if no candidates passes this threshold in the first round, a second round shall take place between the two candidates with most votes.
About 1.89 million voters are called to vote, but hundreds of thousands of them live outside Kosovo. The latter have the right to vote by mail, but only a few thousand have exercised this right in the past elections.
The voting takes place in 2477 voting stations, which are opened from 07:00 until 19:00 in the evening.
