Matthew Palmer, a senior US State Department official, and Angelina Eichhorst, director of the European External Action Service (EEAS), have cancelled their visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The decision comes after the National Assembly of Republika Srpska, the Serbian entity of Bosnia, voted to leave key state institutions, including the Bosnian military and the tax and judiciary system.
Bosnian MP Damir Arnaut made the announcement for local media, informing also that the two envoys would “suspend” negotiations until further notice.
Palmer is the U.S.’s envoy for electoral reform to Bosnia and was set to visit the country in an attempt to broker a deal on electoral reform before national elections that are scheduled to be held next October.
In addition to Republika Srpska’s secessionist attempts, Bosnian Croats criticize their underrepresentation in the country’s electoral system that is proportioned along ethnic lines.
Last week, he told Radio Free Europe that during his trip, he would seek “limited, targeted constitutional change.”
