One Wall Down, Another Goes Up

Mayor of Mitrovica Goran Rakić has stated today for Serbian television that the reconstruction of the wall that was destroyed yesterday will start tomorrow. According to Zëri, the new wall will be 70 cm high and 120 cm thick, and will “guarantee the safety” of the Serbian community living north of the river Ibër.

Chief of the EU Mission in Prishtina Natalya Apostolova confirmed that news about the new separation, although she didn’t want to speak of a “wall”:

The international community will support any initiative. There will be no more walls, but there will be a different construction. There will be several metal poles that will prevent cars from entering the square, which will be very beautiful.

The initial wall that was destroyed yesterday after an agreement between the local representation of Mitrovica and the central Kosovar government in Pristhina had been built illegally in December by the municipality to separate the city’s Serbian northern bank from the Albania southern bank.
