Harsh Penalties for Rule Violation as Coronavirus Cases Rise

The number of confirmed cases of Coronavirus has reached 65 and doctors are warning that we can expect a drastic rise in figures as we enter the third week.

The most recent case is that of a 65-year-old from Patos who had previously been self-quarantined. They were rushed to the infectious diseases hospital last night after a deterioration in health.

There have been two deaths so far and among the infected are three Italian nationals and nine doctors and nurses. The most cases of infection are in Tirana, followed by Fier, Durres, and Elbasan.

Doctor Pellumb Pipero told the media that the number of people infected from Coronavirus is at least 10 times those identified. Prime Minister Edi Rama has repeatedly called for citizens to stay in their homes and avoid going outside unless necessary.

Following widespread abuse of the rules regarding socialising and congregating, Rama announced a series of penalties for those found in violation. In Librazhd, seven pedestrians have been fined 10,000 ALL. In Sarande, a total of 10 drivers were found violating the rules and had their licenses taken from them.
