Virtual 5K Run Raises $4,395 for Albanian Families

The Together, Apart Virtual 5k initiative that took place on Saturday 18 April, raised a total of $4,395 to help Albanian families facing food insecurity during the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.

The online 5km race was organised by US citizen Sarah Keese with support from Exit journalist Alice Taylor. It brought together participants from all over the world including Albania, UK, America, Ghana, and beyond.

Participants logged in via Zoom and were able to see and interact with other users as they took part in real-time. Some chose not to run and instead did yoga, jogged, danced, stepped, cycled, and just walked. Most participants completed the 5k at home due to COVID-19 restrictions but others were able to go outside while observing social distancing measures.

The initial target was $2000 but thanks to the generosity of the 92 donors, they were able to raise double, and a bit more than hoped for.

The money will be divided between Food Bank Albania and other carefully vetted local NGOs that will use it to distribute food parcels to those suffering from lack of income during this time. The COVID-19 lockdown that has been in force since the beginning of March has left many without jobs, income, or any idea of when things will improve. Many are unable to pay rent or provide the most basic food or hygiene supplies.

The donations will provide a significant amount of food and drinks as well as hygiene products to those most in need throughout the country.
