There has been an increase in the cultivation of cannabis in Albania over the last few months, according to General Prosecutor Olsian Cela.
Cela made the statement during a virtual report for Parliament. He said that some regions are more affected by this than others;
“We have noticed an increase in narcotics in Kruja, Vlora, Gjirokaster, and Shkodra,” he said.
He spoke about the reasons why there has been an increase in production and said that he has requested reports from district prosecutors. As of yet, he said he has not received a response from them.
Over the last few weeks, the State Police have begun to monitor the country with drones in the hope of identifying areas where cannabis is grown. So far, there has only been one successful seizure and that was of a cannabis laboratory in Fier. This was not discovered by drone, however, but rather through an illegal electricity connection which was supplying lights and hydroponics.
So far, the state has not made public any results regarding the monitoring of the country with drones in the hope of identifying areas planted with cannabis.
