Acting President of Kosovo Vjosa Osmani said that the right to vote is an inalienable right, which “can not be conditioned by a phone call.”
Osmani’s reaction comes after the Central Election Commission of Kosovo, issued on Monday a decision to verify applications for voter registration outside Kosovo.
Among others, this decision says that CEC “will reject the applications of those who do not answer the phone call at the time when the CEC calls them for verification”.
“The right to vote is a fundamental right, guaranteed by our Constitution and all international conventions on human rights,” Osmani wrote in a letter sent to the head of CEC, Valdete Daka.
“As such, the right to vote is an inalienable right, which cannot be conditioned by a phone call,” Osmani said.
She added that the point on verification via phone call can create circumstances in which the right to vote is flagrantly violated.
The CEC also decided that the period for voter registration outside Kosovo should begin on 13 January and end on 21 January.
Snap parliamentary elections in Kosovo are set to be hold on February 14, following a decision of the Constitutional Court which ruled that the voting in of the government was in violation with Constitution, due to a vote of an already convicted MP.
