Albania Among the Last in Europe for Press Freedom

Albania ranks among the last three countries in Europe for freedom of media. This is the conclusion that Freedom House’s 2017 Press Freedom Report draws.

The report assesses the degree of freedom of media in 199 countries and territories around the world, observing the political and economic situation of the country, the influence of government, businesses or criminal groups in the media and coverage of events.

For years now, according to the report the media in Albania is estimated to be only partly free.

The Albanian press freedom is estimated at a total of 51 points – in an evaluation system of 0 to 100, where 0 indicates full freedom, while 100 is the total lack of freedom.

As in previous years, Albanian press continues to be affected by politics and private business. A more independent and free alternative is being offered by some online media and blogs, which are recently spreading more and more, but are often attacked by the government.

In Europe, Albania leaves behind only Macedonia, which has long been involved in media scandals and political crisis, and Turkey, which de facto has gone under an authoritarian regime in Erdogan’s direction.
