Albanian Central Election Commission Proposes Diaspora Voting

The Central Election Commission (CEC) has proposed voting for Albanian emigrants “by mail and downloading the ballot paper online from the CEC website,” reads a report published by Abc News.

With the new changes, on October 5, the electoral code authorized the CEC to decide when Albanian citizens living abroad will have the opportunity to vote abroad. The CEC was also charged with implementing this decision whenever it is taken.

Earlier, the group ‘Diaspora for a Free Albania’ (DSHL) sent a letter to the Government Assembly, asking the new CEC to make the emigrants vote one of the main issues on their agenda.

The DSHL group is part of the working group set up by the CEC to enable their vote in the 2021 elections.

“We have noticed from the government with appointments of political persons as diaspora commissioners. We have opposed this. We want the vote to be done, but we want it to be done correctly “, said Bledar Milaqi in an interview with Neritan Sejamini.

They explained that over the years, remittances have been an important factor for the Albanian economy, so their right to vote is a right that arises naturally for a number of reasons.
