Following the news of a 65-year old school watchman having raped and blackmailed a minor who attended the school he worked at, Albanian Minister of Education Besa Shahini spoke today in parliament regarding the case.
Shahini implied that the responsibility for hiring the school watchman fell to the Tirana Municipality, not the Ministry of Education.
She said that watchmen and cleaning staff come to the schools after being hired, and, one assumes, screened by the municipality. “Municipalities must keep in mind that school staff must have integrity,” Shahini stated.
The director of the school has been suspended from duty, and has been replaced by the deputy director.
