A study by two Albanian doctors- Genc Sulcebe and Alban Ylli has attempted to pinpoint the areas of Tirana which have the highest rate of infection for COVID-19.
According to their findings, Pazari i Ri, the area near Polyclinic 9 on Rruga Kavaje, and the area around Rruga Siri Kodra have the highest number of positive cases. The areas with the least number of victims are Sheshi Willson, neighbourhoods around the Artificial Lake, and Laprake.
In addition to this, they found that the infection rate in the population of Tirana is only around 6-7%. This means we are “far from collective immunity and with lower positivity compared to other countries.”
Ylli said the virus is likely to continue spreading and that we can expect to see higher numbers than currently. He proposed to curb further opening, including possibly postponing the start of the school year.
The doctors also levied criticism at members of the public who fail to observe measures. They said public awareness must be raised to adapt to this new normality as it is not known how long it will take for a vaccine to be developed, or if it will even be effective.
