A 15-minute film by an Albanian filmmaker has been shortlisted for an Oscar.
“The Van” by Erenik Beqiri was also shown at the Cannes Film Festival in 2019 and was shortlisted for the Short Film Palme d’or. Now, it will compete for the Short Live Action Film Oscar.
The Van took three years to complete and was produced with Origine Films. He was inspired by the common story of the struggle of young and old Albanians trying to emigrate and build a better life for themselves. The story centres around the son who must pay a debt by fist fighting so he and his father can leave Albania.
The Oscars will take place online on 25 April 2021.
