Albanian Government Censors Controversial Victim-Blaming Comments by Mimi Kodheli

The Albanian government has been accused of censoring controversial remarks made by former Minister Mimi Kodheli.

The case of the 15-year-old who was raped by her school guard was discussed during a meeting of the Alliance of Women MPs. Kodheli made a number of comments about the case, implying that the teachers were to blame:

“Once, we considered teachers as second parents…the teacher would call your parents and ask why the child was absent from school. However, our teachers today have their minds on other things. There isn’t enough time for one to both be a teacher and draft syllabuses the whole day, but also dye her hair, do her makeup, wear skirts and miniskirts. Once, our teachers were unmarried before, but today just about anyone can become a teacher.”

These sessions are required to be made public. The video was uploaded to YouTube but after controversy erupted over Kodheli’s comments, it was removed, edited, censored, and re-uploaded without her remarks.
