A national effort to clean-up Albanian beaches of litter and debris is set to start in the coming weeks.
Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama announced on Sunday morning a beach cleaning campaign as a coordinated effort between the central government and the local authorities throughout the country.
He informed that the government would earmark a special sea-coast fund in the public budget to support this campaign.
During a ceremony to launch the campaign in the southern coastal city of Vlora, Rama was very critical of local authorities along Albanian seacoast for not allocating enough resources for keeping beaches and coastline clean, urging them to increase financing and efforts to keep the coasts clean.
Albanian beaches are heavily littered with solid waste, trash and chemical material, including plastic bags and containers, tin cans, toys, clothes, and other disposals.
Part of the litter ends in the sea, polluting waters and often washing out in other countries’ coasts along the Adriatic and Ionian.
