Albania’s Minister of Interior Sander Lleshaj visited Pristina on Friday, following the publication of war crimes charges against several former Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) leaders, and their detention in The Hague, including the country’s president.
In similar statements issued after the closed-door meeting, Leshaj and his counterpart Agim Veliu did not mention the charges and detentions that have shaken Kosovo’s institutions and politics.
The two ministers said they discussed cooperation in the field of security, “fight against terrorism and the prevention of violent extremism, against illegal migration, trafficking of human beings, the fight against narcotics trafficking, organized crime, but also public safety in general.” They also agreed to set up joint working groups to coordinate the implementation of several agreements signed in the last years in their field.
The meeting comes amidst war crime charges against former KLA leaders, filed by The Hague-based Kosovo court.
Indictments against Hashim Thaci, Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selimi and Jakup Krasniqi included charges for alleged war crimes committed in the territory of Albania.
