Albanian Ombudsman Asks Authorities to Provide Food and Water for Those at Kakaviaj Crossing

The Albanian People’s Ombudsman has called upon diplomatic institutions in Albania and Greece to intervene to resolve the situation created at the Kakavija and Kapshtica crossing point. Citizens have been waiting for almost 48 hours to cross the border with queues stretching for 20km.

In a public statement, the Ombudsman has asked the Albanian authorities to help those in the queue with basic needs such as water, food, and hygienic/sanitary services.

The Ombudsman said they will follow and monitor the fulfilment of the obligations of the institutions in terms of normalizing the situation.

The queues formed as Greek authorities are only processing arrivals during the day. In addition to this, additional procedures in place because of the COVID-19 pandemic has led to significant delays.
