Albanian Ombudsman Launches Investigation into Police Violence against Roma Youth

The Albanian Ombudsman has launched an investigation into the assault of a Roma youth by Tirana Municipal Police.

The assault was caught on video and quickly went viral. It shows two policemen trying to put a young Roma man into a police vehicle and then violently detain him after he managed to slip away. The man is heard saying “please” repeatedly, while policemen tell him to stop. It seems that the young man was collecting cans near the urban waste bins as nearby, a cart filled with recyclable items can be seen.

The Ombudsman has sent a series of questions to the Municipal Police regarding the event. Amongst the questions asked are the names of the police officers caught on film, and the legal basis for detaining the person.
