Today, the parliament’s Socialist majority passed the Criminal Code changes regarding violations of the coronavirus preventative restrictions taken by the government, including the recommendations of President Ilir Meta.
The passed legal provisions are:
- Violating restrictions during a state of natural disaster, when an administrative measure has already been taken, incurs a fine or a prison sentence up to 6 months.
- Commercial activity in violation of the restrictions during a state of natural disaster incurs a prison sentence up to 2 years.
- Breaking quarantine when the person has been mandated to self-isolate by health authorities incurs a 2-3 years long prison sentence.
- Intentionally spreading the disease by someone who has been diagnosed with it incurs a 2-5 years long prison sentence.
- Unintentionally spreading the disease by someone who has been diagnosed with it incurs a fine or a prison sentence up to 2 years.
- Violation of preventative measures, that has serious consequences for the health and life of the population, incurs a 3-8 years long prison sentence.
The changes were passed with 88 MPs voting for them, 13 against and one abstaining. The 140-seat Albanian parliament currently has only 121 MPs after the opposition left one year ago.
Today, parliament held an extraordinary session during which 21 legal initiatives passed, including changes in the Criminal Code, budget review for 2020, and coronavirus preventative measures.
Additionally, it voted down President Meta’s decrees that vetoed the anti-corruption law and a law on property rights.
