Albanian Police Forcibly Disperse Protest Against Hydropower Plants, Protestors Arrested

The Albanian State Police arrested two activists- Andi Tepelena and Martin Gjionaj for illegal protesting on the main Boulevard last night.

The protest was organised against the construction of hydropower plants in the country, often at detriment to protected areas of natural beauty.

Citizens were sitting on the sidewalk of the Boulevard, in front of the Pyramid where they were giving speeches. Police stormed the gathering and demanded they left, accusing them of violating the law.

The protestors explained to the police that they had announced the protest to the relevant authorities and they demanded explanations for their alleged violations. The police then dragged the protestors forcibly to Commissariat No.2.

The protestors then published the notification of the protest that was presented to the police prior to the event. It notified them of the name of the organisation “Let’s Protect the Rivers”, as well as the date, time, and location. It was signed by environmentalist Lavdosh Ferruni. He was also escorted to a police station by authorities.
