The office of President Ilir Meta has accused the ruling Socialist Party of Prime Minister Edi Rama of enabling criminal organizations to send citizens phone messages appearing to be delivered from the President’s private phone number.
In a press statement on Friday, spokesperson Tedi Blushi apologized on behalf of the President to citizens who had received insulting and threatening messages seemingly coming from Meta.
It blamed it on the Socialist Party who “in an illegal and mafia-style way hijacked the personal data of all citizens for purposes of political and electoral monitoring and blackmailing”.
The statement said such an incident could jeopardize the national security of Albania, a NATO member, and called for an international investigation.
