Albanian President Ilir Meta called the government and Tirana municipality’s attempts to demolish the National Theatre “well-structured criminal activity.”
The President said that the government acts and decisions that have been made public in the past few hours have been “unbelievable.” He called the Tirana municipality’s decision to demolish the National Theatre “madness,” especially coming at a time when the legality of this demolition is awaiting review by the Constitutional Court.
He called on the government to reflect and give up this decision as it will lead to irrevocable losses and infringement on the country’s national identity.
On May 14, the Tirana municipal council approved the demolition of the National Theatre building in a meeting that was not officially announced to the public.
