Albanian President Ilir Meta has sent back to parliament a law proposing the vetting of police officers. This is the second time that Meta refuses to decree the legislation.
He argued that, this close to the general elections, “the pressure of the vetting process constitutes an even larger risk to the impartiality of the police force.” Meta added that the vetting process at this time “provides ample opportunity for misuse in certain cases, especially during the electoral process.”
Exit has previously explained how police vetting risks placing the police force, a politically impartial institution, under political control.
