Albania’s Intercity Transport Association has warned that there will be an up to 30% increase in ticket prices if the government fails to intervene by lowering oil prices or other relief measures.
The head of the association, Kujtim Mema, said that, even after public transport starts anew, social distancing regulations will make it hard to attain the same passenger numbers as before the pandemic. By working at half capacity as instructed, he claimed, many transport companies risk bankruptcy unless they raise ticket prices.
Mema asked the government to intervene and lower oil prices or, at least slash municipal taxes in half for the month.
Though oil prices have seen a tremendous drop globally, this does not seem to be the case in Albania, which has also sparked protests by fishermen in Saranda and Durrës.
