Albania’s opposition will hold a third major protest on April 13th. This will be the seventh protest since opposition’s decision to vacate parliamentary seats.
Opposition’s largest party, Democratic Party (PD) called on Albanians to join the April 13 protest at 6pm, which marks a shift from the previous daytime hours. Meanwhile, protests will be held on every parliamentary session.
The opposition left the parliament one month ago. Its supporters have been protesting in tens of thousands since then, demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama, whom they accuse of corruption, vote buying and ties to criminal groups.
Rama has refused to resign, arguing that the opposition is inventing crises.
In June, Albania is set to hold local elections. The opposition has indicated it won’t participate in any elections unless Rama resigns and a transitional government is installed, which will enable free and fair elections in the country.
Rama’s Socialist Party has meanwhile started preparations for the June elections. In a meeting yesterday, Rama expressed his certainty and assured supporters that his party will win the next local elections in all municipalities. He also invited a dozen of MPs who have taken up mandates left by the opposition to join forces with his party in approving a new electoral reform.
