Albin Kurti Speaks on Relations with Rama, the National Theater and Vetevendosje Arrests in Tirana

Acting Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti said that relations between himself and Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama remain “frozen”.

Kurti appeared on RTV Ora last night and said that despite efforts he has made to maintain a relationship, Rama has not cooperated.

“I do not have any relations with Prime Minister Rama. I proposed to meet together at the end of March […] to discuss the issue of combating the COVID-19 pandemic, but also about each other’s concerns because the border should not separate us.”

Kurti also spoke on the matter of the National Theater. He said that it should have been turned into a museum and not demolished.

“The National Theater isn’t only Albania, it belongs to all Albanians, even the diaspora. The approach of demolishing the theater in the early hours of the morning in times of pandemic, to create a shopping center and theater there- it seems like a neoliberal logic, rather than a kind of care for the culture of urbanization.”

He also spoke about the arrests of several Vetevendosje activists during the theater protests, including the leader of the Tirana Vetevendosje Center, Bojken Abazi. Kurti said they were to “set an example” for other activists and to say “when we do this with your leaders, what will we do with you?”
