Appeals Panel Rejects Opposition Claim for Repeat Elections in 2 Districts

The Electoral College has rejected the opposition claims for repeat elections in Vlora and Gjirokastër.

The decision to refuse a repeat election in Vlora was announced on Tuesday, that of Gjirokastër on Monday.

On June 4, the Electoral College will decide whether repeat elections will be held in Berat, while its decision for Durrës and Shkodër will be announced next week, on June 9 and 10 respectively.

Opposition Democratic Party (PD) and Socialist Movement for Integration (LSI) have appealed their demand for repeat elections in 9 of Albania’s 12 districts, following their claims that the April 25 elections amounted to an “electoral massacre” conducted by the ruling Socialist Party (PS).

Their complaints filed with the Committee of Complaints and Sanctions at the Central Election Commission were all reviewed and rejected.

PS won 74 seats in the 140-seat parliament, PD 59, LSI 4 and PSD 3. Opposition leader Lulzim Basha has vowed not to recognize elections.
