This morning Appeals Court judge Shkëlqim Miri was arrested on account of corruption. After searching his house, the police fund more than 30 million lekë in cash.
Miri is accused of passive corruption, and is suspected of receiving a bribe of €20,000 from Gentian Doda to lower his accusation from “murder” to “injury.” Doda had been accused for two murders in 1997 and was sentenced with 20 years imprisonment. He managed to escape prison and was captured in 2012, and extradited to Albania. During his appeal, Miri released Doda from jail by changing his accusation.
Report TV reports that 10 other judges are currently under investigation of the Prosecution of Serious Crimes for hiding their assets and corruption. Meanwhile, also the vetting is expected to put the wealth of the Albanian judges under the magnifying glass.
