The Democratic Party (PD) is set to hold its second national assembly in a week, as a nation-wide referendum is taking place to oust current party leadership.
PD chairman Lulzim Basha called a meeting of the party’s highest decision-making organ for December 18 in response to the national assembly initiated by former Prime Minister Sali Berisha last Saturday.
The December 18 Assembly is expected to make decisions regarding the future of the party and may vote on a proposition to expel all members designated by the United States for corruption.
The two factions of the party have been at odds since September, when Basha expelled Berisha from the PD’s parliamentary group after this latter’s designation by the U.S. department of state for corruption.
Berisha challenged his expulsion and called a meeting of the National Assembly on December 11 where 4,400 of the organ’s 7,600 members voted to oust current party leadership, including Basha, and annul Berisha’s expulsion.
A referendum is taking place across Albania to implement the Assembly’s decision to dismiss Basha and other party leaders. 75,000 card-carrying party members are eligible to vote in 106 voting centers.
Voting started at 8 a.m. this morning and will last until 5 p.m.
