Biden’s Letter to Vucic Discussed in National Security Council of Serbia

Kosovo was the main topic during a meeting of the National Security Council of Serbia held on Monday, the minister of Defense, Nebojsa Stefanovic said.

“The most important topic of our meeting was the current situation in the territory of Kosovo and Metohija where we have a complex security situation. This is in political and security terms. Of course we talked about what our state institutions are doing to maintain stability in our southern province,” Stefanovic said, Klan Kosova reported.

“First of all, we want to protect the Serb population there,” he added.

Another important topic discussed was the letter that the Serbian President, Aleksandar Vucic received from the President of the United States of America, Joe Biden.

President Biden through this letter congratulates Serbia on its national day on February 15, by also urging them to recognize Kosovo as an independent country.

“You saw some congratulatory letters for our national day. A large number of politicians in our southern province are rejoicing over these letters,” Stefanovic said.

In reaction to the message, Vucic told journalists that Serbia is ready to continue the dialogue with Kosovo but it will not recognize it, Serbian news agency Tanjug reported. He said this request is a new policy by the United States, which is not found in any international document and which he respects, as he respects the positions of Russia and China who oppose Kosovo’s statehood.

Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia on February 17, 2008.
