British Embassy Calls for Investigation Over Fresh Police Violence Allegations in Albania

The British Embassy in Tirana has called for an investigation into violence used against activists and journalists in recent weeks.

In a Facebook post, they wrote:

“The British Embassy has followed the developments with protests and reports on the detention of some activists in Albania. We underscore the need to uphold the right to peaceful assembly and to call for a fair investigation into all allegations of violence.”

The reaction came following protests due to the arrests and alleged violence used by police against three activists and one journalist; Donald Martini, Astrit Seranaj, Gentian Hasani, and Ergys Mertiri. While detained, they claimed they were treated badly and had footage forcibly deleted from a phone.

The protestors have accused the government of governing with violence and using it to suppress citizens rights.

The government or police are yet to comment on the alleged violence used during the last two weeks.
