Albania has seen a surge in reported coronavirus infected cases since it began to reopen and preventative restrictions started being lifted. Hospitalized cases have also been steadily on the rise.
On June 19, the first coronavirus case was found in Saranda, whereas on June 23, the first infected case was found in Delvina. Both cities had not been affected by the virus since the beginning of the pandemic.
On June 24, Kruja saw 18 new infected cases, the city with the most reported cases for the day, even surpassing the usual top city, the capital of Tirana. One of the infected is an employee of the city’s Property Registration Office.
The virus has returned to Vlora, where 14 of the recently discovered cases can be traced back to a sewing factory that has become a dangerous hotbed, much like two other sewing factories in Kruja earlier this year. In Berat, too, a sewing factory worker has been infected.
The University of Elbasan was also affected by the virus, as an infected student was reported on June 24. The government reopened universities for a 3-4 week period in June so that seniors could complete their exams.
On April 13, the government opened the country for Albanian citizens who lived abroad and wished to return to Albania. Thus, one infected person from Fier had returned recently from the UK. 3 infected cases in Kurbin, too, are members of a family who had returned from the UK. An infected case from Elbasan who had returned from abroad was reported yesterday.
As of June 24, the total number of coronavirus infected cases in Albania is 2114. There are currently 850 active cases in the country, while 48 people have died as a result of the virus.
