Curfew to Continue, British COVID-19 Variant Present in Albania

The curfew between 20:00 and 06:00 every night will remain in force for another two weeks according to the COVID-19 technical committee.

Other measures in force for the next fortnight include:

  • The closure of all businesses, bars, pubs, and restaurants at 20:00. Home delivery will be allowed.
  • The closure of high schools in high-risk areas including Tirana, Durres, Lezha, Lushnje, Kamza, Berat, Gjirokastra, and Fier.
  • The extension of university exams. Learning will continue online.
  • Flights to the UK remain suspended. Any travelers from the UK must quarantine for two weeks upon arrival.

It was decided the measures would continue due to a high number of infections, deaths, and instances of serious illness in young people.

Health Minister Ogerta Manastirliou confirmed that the British variant of COVID-19 is present in Albania. She said that samples had been sent to Turkey who confirmed the variant.

This, she said, was part of the reason that numbers of infections have increased as the British variant is believed to be more infectious.
