The Safe Journalists network has raised concerns over “credible claims” of staff dismissals without following due process at the Albanian state public broadcaster, RTSH.
The network, which represents more than 8200 journalists across the region, sent a letter to the newly appointed Director-General Enkeled Joti. While congratulating him on his new position, the organisations highlighted the reports of journalists “being laid off without following due process”.
They reminded Joti of the law on labour rights and that his decisions, while executing his role, must align with labour rights.
“We are aware of your role in directing the general administration of RTSH’s activity and bearing editorial responsibility as well as appointing and dismissing RTSH staff. However, we would like to reiterate that this should be done by ensuring that journalists and labour rights are respected, due process is followed, and in full transparency.”
They also formally requested data on how many journalists have been fired, for what reasons, and under what conditions. Additionally, they reminded Joti he must notify the public as RTSH is a public service.
“Each attack on journalists is an attack on public interest, democracy, and the rights of all citizens,” the letter continued.
