Electronic voting and counting in the April 2021 elections will be implemented in a constituency of the municipality of Tirana.
The CEC Regulatory Commission on Friday approved the decision to test electronic voting and counting in an electoral district that has no more than 55 polling stations.
This means that Democratic Party (DP), Socialist Party (SP) and Socialist Movement for Integration (SMI) have agreed that the pilot project will not take place in Korça and Fier, which were in the initial proposals.
DP proposed the implementation of the pilot project in Korça and Fier. The SMI proposed the districts of Tirana and Korça. But in the end, the request of the Socialist Party was approved, which requested that the project be implemented only in one area of Tirana due to high costs.
Referring to the data from the 2017 elections in the Municipality of Tirana, the only EAZs with less than 55 polling stations are units 1, 3, 8, and 10.
Political parties agreed on June 5 that in the 2021 elections, electronic counting and voting will be tested in an area of Albania. The opposition initially demanded that the project be implemented nationwide but withdrew as this would require a lot of time and financial resources.
Meanwhile, in the April elections across the country, biometric identification of voters will be done before the voting.
