European Parliament President David Sassoli will visit Tirana today, to discuss the February 17 Donor’s Conference for Albania and the country’s EU accession.
The EP President is expected to give his support for Albania’s EU accession and encourage the government to address concerns raised by several EU member states regarding the respect of the rule of law and the fight against organized crime and corruption.
In his 2-day visit, Sassoli will address the Albanian Parliament and have meeting with Prime Minister Edi Rama, Speaker of Parliament Gramoz Ruçi, President Ilir Meta, Mayor of Tirana Erion Veliaj, as well as with opposition leader Lulzim Basha and representatives of civil society.
Sassoli also hosted a Western Balkans Speakers of Parliament Summit last weeks in Brussels, where they all supported the drafting of a new methodology for enlargement, and called on the EU leaders to “urgently […] give new impetus to the enlargement process by delivering concrete results” at the Zagreb Summit in May 2020.
