EU Ambassador to Albania Luigi Soreca called on Albanian institutions to end impunity for high-level corruption, adding that nobody is above the law.
Representatives of Albania authorities and international partners gathered to attend the “Challenges and opportunities in fighting corruption and fostering integrity” event held on Monday.
During the event, Soreca emphasized that “ending impunity is key in building back trust in society and institutions, and attracting foreign investments.”
He stressed that Albania has a lot of work left to do to convict senior officials and investigate magistrates dismissed after failing their vetting.
In March, the EU launched a €5.5 million program run by Spanish, Italian, and Dutch authorities, to support Albanian law enforcement agencies and improve financial investigations.
Starting this week, foreign experts will attend the first trials against high-level corruption held by the Special Prosecution Office Against Corruption (SPAK).
Since 2012, the EU has invested some €60 million in Albania’s justice institutions and vetting process.
