The EU has cut by 75 percent its pre-accession aid to Turkey, according to a letter by Josep Borrell sent to the European Parliament, Deutche Welle reports.
The decision comes in response to Turkey’s military operation in Syria and gas drilling off the coast of its neighbor Cyprus.
The EU aid to Turkey will now amount to just €168 million, with almost all of it foreseen for strengthening democracy and rule of law. Only €18 million will be spent on rural development.
However, Turkey will be able to receive large amount of money from the EU as part of the €3.5 billion package in exchange for Turkey to block refugees from entering the EU.
