EU Delegation Meets Culture Minister to Discuss Restoration of Earthquake Damaged Culture Sites

Yesterday, Ambassador Luigi Soreca the Head of the EU Delegation to Albania met with Minister of Culture Elva Margariti to discuss plans for the EU funded programme that will support cultural heritage after the 26 November Earthquake.

Called “EU4Culture”, the Bylis programme will not only restore sites of cultural interest that were damaged by the quake, but it will help to promote Albania as a tourist destination. The aim is to promote Albanian cultural heritage in the on-going tourism programme for local economic development.

The project is currently in the design stage and under consultation with local stakeholders and the other EU Member States. As a result, a list of sites and the starting date of the project is yet to be finalised.

The EU has allocated EUR 115 million in grants for post-earthquake reconstruction. Of this, EUR 50 million will be dedicated to the rehabilitation of damaged cultural heritage sites. The project will be implemented through an “entrusted entity”.
