EU, G7 Ambassadors Ask BiH to Support Sanctions against Russia

Ambassadors of EU and G7 countries called on the authorities of Bosnia and Herzegovina to support sanctions imposed by the West against Russia, as confirmed after a meeting between the ambassadors and BiH Presidency Chairman Šefik Džaferović on Monday.

The BiH Presidency said in a statement the Western countries’ ambassadors thanked Bosnia and Herzegovina for supporting the UN General Assembly resolution condemning the Russian aggression against Ukraine, the draft resolution of the UN Security Council and the EU’s views and measures regarding the matter.

“Bosnia and Herzegovina has been requested to continue with the same policy whereby it stood on the right side of history and for the competent BiH institutions to implement restrictions against the institutions and other entities of the Russian Federation as envisaged by the acts of the EU which BiH has joined,” the statement said.

Džaferović confirmed his strong condemnation of the Russian aggression against Ukraine and support for restrictions that were being taken in that regard, announcing that he would ask the country’s government, the Council of Ministers, to comply with and implement the EU’s restrictions strictly.

BiH did support the UN resolution condemning the Russian aggression as well as the EU’s statements and views. However, the Serb member of the BiH Presidency, Milorad Dodik, has said that he will block any attempt to introduce any sanctions against Russia or its nationals in BiH.

Due to opposition from Serb ministers, the BiH Council of Ministers has also not adopted a decision whereby BiH would support a European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) resolution to deny Russia and Belarus EBRD funds even though EU ambassadors requested its finance minister to do so in a démarche.
