European Union countries have agreed to lift coronavirus-related travel restrictions for Albanian travelers, according to a statement made by an EU official to German media on Wednesday.
Albania, along with seven other countries—including North Macedonia and the United States—will be added to the EU’s whitelist of safe countries to travel from. To be part of the whitelist, a country must have had no more than 75 COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents in the last 14 days.
Nevertheless, individual member states will have the power to impose the restrictions they deem necessarily, and may ask that travelers present a negative COVID-19 test, or be subject to quarantine before fully entering the country.
The decision is expected to be ratified by the end of the week.
In May, the European Council lifted entry restrictions for nonessential travel for individuals who have been fully vaccinated from a pre-approved list of vaccines, including Pfizer, Moderna, and AstraZeneca.
