On July 17, the European Commission adopted a €100 million package to aid Albania in its post-earthquake reconstruction efforts.
The package is part of the €115 million pledge made by the European Commission at the International Donors’ Conference that took place in February. The initial €15 million grant was announced in December 2019 and foresees the reconstruction of 22 schools.
These funds will be used initially for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of educational facilities in order to enable schools to reopen for students as quickly as possible. Subsequently, they will also fund the reconstruction of damaged cultural heritage sites like monuments, museums, libraries, and archaeological sites.
