Flooding in Kosovo, Outgoing Prime Minister Visits the Situation Center

Following the flooding caused by heavy rains and snow in Kosovo, the outgoing Prime Minister Avdullah Hoti visited the Situation Center on Monday.

During the meeting with the director of the Situation Center, Shaqir Shaqiri and the Secretary of the Security Secretariat, Shpend Terdevaj, Hoti discussed the measures that need to be taken on managing the situation.

“Kosovo institutions are closely monitoring the situation and all state capacities have been put on alert, including the Agency for Emergency Management, Local Headquarters and the Kosovo Security Force,” a statement issued by Hoti’s office says.

It also points out that Prime Minister Hoti is in communication with the Commander of NATO-led international peacekeeping force in Kosovo, KFOR, Major General Franco Federici, “who has expressed readiness to assist by the peacekeeping force if such a thing will be necessary”.

Since Friday flooding was reported in several areas across Kosovo.

The Hydrometeorological Institute of Kosovo, IHK announced that as a result of heavy rains, the level of rivers has risen.

According to IHK levels have reached maximum quotas in rivers Drini I Bardhe, Ereniku, Peja’s Bistrica, Decani’s Bistrica, Mirusha, Toplluha, Ibri, Sitnica and Drenica.

Local media reported that a bridge in the village of Hajnoc in Kamenica has collapsed, blocking the road connecting Strezoc and Krileve villages.

Except for other municipalities, flooding was reported in some neighbourhoods of the capital, Prishtina.

While is not known yet about the amount of material damage cause across the country.
