Foreign Enterprises Increase, Turnover Decreases in 2019

In 2019, there were 6443 foreign and joint enterprises in Albania, an increase of 184 on the previous year. 

Out of these, the countries with the most shares in Albanian companies or joint enterprises were Italy and Greece with 53.4% of enterprises, 60.9% of employment, 53.4% of exports, and 49.2% of imports. Out of all foreign companies in Albania, over 65% were from the EU and just 10.9% were from other Western Balkan countries.

In terms of the activities they carry out, European Community companies dominated the services sector, followed by trade and then industry. They typically employed between 1-9 people. Only 1.2% were large companies employing more than 250 people.

20% of the total turnover of domestic companies in Albania was attributed to foreign-owned companies in 2019, this decreased by around 5% per year from 2017 and 2018.
