Forest Fire in Fushe Kruje Threatens Church

Another fire broke out near the Church of Derven in Fushe Kruje, central Albania.

According to reports, the fire was burning through an area of bushes and trees. Due to the direction and strength of the wind, the church which is a prefabricated building was at serious risk from the flames.

Thanks to the intervention of both state and private firefighters, the blaze which was approaching the church was extinguished. The rest of the fire which is covering an area of around 2 hectares is still being fought by firefighters.

Albania has been plagued by an unusually high number of forest fires during the last month. Both the north and south of the country have been affected with thousands of hectares of forest as well as olive and fruit trees being destroyed. Authorities say that most were started deliberately.
