Fourth Prison Starts Hunger Strike Over Conditions and Alleged Human Rights Violations

Some 150 inmates at prison 313 in Tirana are protesting and asking for better human rights and a general improvement in conditions. They have started a hunger strike until their demands are met.

They have issued three demands:

  • To be allowed to meet family members;
  • The fulfilment of hygienic conditions;
  • An end to violent behavior and threats against them.

They have also denounced the food they are given saying it is not fit for consumption. Inmates also claim their living quarters are infested with insects.

They join three other prisons that are currently also on hunger strike over alleged human rights violations, inhumane treatment, and lack of contact with family members.
