Elyas Dayee, a journalist working for Radio Free Europe (RFE), was killed on Thursday in the Afghan province of Helmand after a bomb exploded in his car.
Omer Zwak, the spokesperson of the provincial governor told RFE that the bomb attached to Dayee’s car had killed the journalist and injured three other people, including his brother.
No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, RFE reports.
Dayee worked for the Afghanistan Service at the RFE.
“My dear colleague and friend, Elyas Dayee, lost his life in a terrorist attack this morning,” Sami Mahdi, the head of the Afghanistan bureau said.
“He always had a smile on his face. This is terrible news,” he said.
Siddiq Sddiqui, the spokesperson of the Afghan presidency condemned “the murder”, saying “behind the attack are the enemies of freedom of expression and the media in Afghanistan”.
Violence has risen across Afghanistan as government negotiators and the Taliban are meeting in Qatar to find solutions to the war in Afghanistan.
No turning point has been made since the talks began in September.
